50th Anniversary

Sunday afternoon, July 27th at 4pm, marked the beginning of the 50th Anniversary Celebration of the Grafton Land Trust. Instead of fire works, nature chose to usher in the event with a tremendous rainstorm that forced everyone inside rath er than picnicking outside as planned.

Over 65 members, their families and guests filled the Community Barn for this kick-off event. Highlight of the event was the pictorial celebration of the Founders and Land Donors shown on big screen. Vignettes about each of our gifted properties and their donors were continuously presented. Our original Charter, memorabilia from years past, and early records of the Trust were available for viewing. The inaugural of the 50th Anniversary commemorative pieces hand-fashioned by Danforth Pewters of Vermont were available. The pieces are offered as either an ornament or a key chain and cost $14.95 each. (A great idea for a Holiday gift).

President Ken Holberger welcomed attendees and honored guests, and introduced the 50th Anniversary Committee members and its Chair, Joe Tancrell who proceeded to give an update on future events.

Joe reported on the funds raised to date towards the goal of $50,000 for development and for the events, which now stands at $6000. He noted that only 100 members at $500 or 200 members at $250 are all that is needed to make this goal a reality. The fundraising continues through the end of the year.

Joe thanked all those in attendance, especially the honorees, and thanked them for their foresight, commitment, and leadership to make the Trust possible. A special thank you was offered to Buggy Whip Caterers who at the last minute had to change plans and even cooked for a while in the pouring rain. Also commended were members of the Committee and volunteers who helped put the displays together, put up the canopy, and assisted with the clean-up. Before concluding, Life Member, Rita Martin offered a brief history of the magnificent oak tree that served as our logo and is our symbol of strength and endurance.

Members of the Committee: Gloria Anderons, Barbar Fontecchio, Ed Hazzard, Jeanne Johnson, Steve Libuda, Joy Nicholson, Tim Pierie, Monique Rinner, Jack Whittaker, and Donna Williams
