Celebration Time Redux
All in all it was a grand celebration for our Trust’s 50th Anniversary. Early on the committee decided to forge a series of activities that would reflect our history as well as to define our success. In addition to special activities we also wanted to have special mementos of this unique milestone. The latter included, hand-forged Danforth pewter ornaments and key chains with the GLT logo (our beloved old oak tree), tote bags to display our name and logo, and, as a result of the photo contest, beautiful, colorful calendars of the nature of Grafton at its best. Many of these articles are still available and can be purchased by calling Jeanne Johnson or Pat Methot at (508) 839-7402 x2, or Joe Tancrell (508) 839-6454. (They still make wonderful gifts).
Our kickoff celebration was in honor of our Founders and Land Donors. Nature herself provided the fireworks with a tremendous thunderstorm. Kudos to Joe Garabedian and the Buggy Whip staff for “keeping on cooking” during the storm. A continuously running power point presentation highlighted our Founders and Land Donors. (It, too, is available if you want to borrow it).
September featured the Roger D. Hohman Memorial Lecture held at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine (Tufts) with Mark Pokras, DVM and Director of the Wildlife Clinic. Dr. Pokras’ outstanding presentation featured photos of over 30 animals from the local wildlife population and discussed the environmental problems they face. With a reception following at the Agnes Varis Campus Center, catered by Loaves and Fishes, the evening was a fine tribute to honor Roger.
In October our Pancake and Take-a-hike Breakfast to honor our past Presidents was an instant success – so much so that it may become a regular feature of Land Trust activities in the future. Many thanks, again, to Buggy Whip for a delicious breakfast and deep appreciation to Bert Engvall and the Scouts of Troop 107 who helped on the trails.
The celebration closed with a Gala dinner at the Highfields Golf & Country Club. With a trio from Apple Tree Arts providing background music for our reception to the fine buffet provided by the chef at Highfields, everyone enjoyed a relaxed ambience especially with special guests who were former members of the Trust and who returned to celebrate this milestone occasion with us. The highlight of the evening was our speaker “the humble farmer” aka Bob Skoglund. With his special brand of Maine humor, Bob had the audience in laughter and tears of levity. He was the surprise speaker of the evening and was a fitting way to celebrate our 50 years.
Many thanks to our honorary chairs – Rita Martin, Charlie Bolack, and Dick Harris. To our wonderful hard-working committee, high fives for a super job. Working on the committee were: Gloria Anderson, George Durfee, Barbara Fontecchio, Ed Hazzard, Jeanne Johnson, Steve Libuda, Joy Nicholson, Tim Pierie, Monique Rinner, Donna Williams, and JackWhittaker.
We look forward to our next celebration – for our 75th. A huge thanks to all our members and our Board of Directors for your faith in us and for your support.
— Joe Tancrell, Chair, 50th Committee
